well, they (the recording guys) can choose to use/not to use the feed of certain mikes on stage/in the air. There's never any harm having a few spare tracks around. It doesn't impress me either when the engineer uses just a pair of mikes to 'prove' that he can 'get it right with two'.Also, we have to consider the playback equipment of the market, which is much less than hi-fi, hence spotlightting (or the overuse of it) may not be a bad thing for those playback systems.
