I suppose I know why "classical" singers and/or their recording labels go in for this sort of thing ($$$), but I agree that the results tend to be mixed at best. There are and have been numerous singers who specialize in the Broadway repertoire, so what's the point of an opera singer doing it in a way that it was never intended to be performed? All they seem to accomplish is to weigh the music down with a burden it can't support and to sound foolish.
