Both sets look wonderful, judging by listings (although I would have preferred Milstein's traversal of the Beethoven cto. with Steinberg instead). It really depends more on how much standard violin repertoire you already have. If you only have a smattering, I'd probably say pop for the Milstein set. There are a LOT of good things in it, and he was pretty much coming into the height of his powers when he recorded for EMI/Capitol.Oistrakh in Prague is sure to have some wonderful performances, too. I have NOT heard it, but if it follows the Richter In Prague and Mravinsky In Prague formats, these are live (radio broadcast) performances, which will vary somewhat in sonic quality.
Hey look. They don't overlap that much in repertoire, so tell your wife to get you the Milstein, then get the Oistrakh for yourself. Why suffer the agony of such decisions!
