In Reply to: Which versions of Sonny Rollins' "Way Out West" is sonically better: XRCD or SACD(the CD layer)? nt posted by Kelvin K on June 10, 2002 at 17:42:11:
This is from a test I posted in the Hi-Rez forum last month:Well, I did some comparisons last night of Way Out West SACD vs. the XRCD version. The main difference I heard was that the SACD was much more detailed and clear. It was as though Sonny was standing before me, giving me a private concert. There was nothing between me and the music. Mix was still panned pretty wide. Bass was tighter, cymbols really shined. Overall, a very fine job.
Now, the XRCD is no slouch. Up until this time, it was the best I've ever heard WOW. Everything was still there, but compared to the SACD, it seemed that someone threw a bedsheet or 2 over the speakers. Had that slightly veiled sound.
Then a listened to the CD layer of the SACD. XRCD blew it away. It was nothing special. Not bad, but not something I would listen to after hearing the SACD and the XRCD.
I did this evaluation to justify spending the extra money to get the SACD versions of XRCDs that I already have. Looking at the upcoming AP releases, I'll get the Adderley, Pepper and possibly the Evans Sunday at the VV. I will also keep the XRCD versions to play in the bedroom system or bring to friends homes.
