I've just finished reading "An Equal Music" by Vikram Set. It's probably the best fiction novel where Music is the main theme, maybe the main character. I can only recall some great Herman Hesse books like "Gertrud" that can compare (and there are points of contact). I must confess that "The Equal Music" left me in a rather uneven mood, quite perturbated by the main character (Michael, a violin player in a quartet) and his personality's struggles and contradictions, but mainly by his intense , almost maddening, feelings when playing music. I wonder if it's frequent among classic music players.A wonderful and challenging book for great music lovers anyway.
