HiI would very strongly support Clark Johnson's recommendation of Badura Skoda on a contemporary Graf fortepiano on Astree. this is definitely not a tinkly 5 ocatve thingy like an early Stein, or a Walter.
Badura Skoda was Edwin Fischer's pupil for a long time and Fischer had very high regard for him.
I would also recommend anything with Georg Demus playing, His version of D960 on HMU is definitive, in its own way.
BTW One of my favourite records of all time is Demus on a Graf, and Ely Ameling and someone on a late 18th C clarinet and Demus - doing a "Schubertiade" [also its original title as issued]. HMU released it. CD? don't know!
The Hi-fi shop I worked at once on weekends, went through 6 copies of this LP, we used it so much 'cos it made most equipment sound good. Everyone there agreed - even the *popular music oriented guys. [* blues jazz, C&W, R&R to 'pop', and anything else in between]
