It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Re: Lucy Kaplansky?

I've seen Lucy live, but have not heard many recordings of her's. I kind of like "Ten Year Night". Another worth checking is her collaberation with Richard Shindell and Dar Williams on "Cry, Cry, Cry" (Both Richard and Dar are worth checking out as well.) Lucy has an interesting bio, in that she has a doctorate degree in psychology and gave up that career and go into music full time. Kind of gutsy move.

Jennifer Kimball is a fine singer also, and was the other half of a duo with Johnatha Brooke known as "The Story". Johnatha also has one or two nice solo works out.

I usually judge a new (to me) singer/songwriter by the company he or she keeps. I check out who shows up on the albums or with whom he/she worked with in other projects. I figure if this person is good enough to perform together with some of them, he or she may be worth checking out. Lucy can be found backing up, or singing with many other great performers (IMO), or has them show up on hers cds.
