It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Musicians as Audiophiles (or not...)

Hey Gtrmaker, (and any other musicians out there...) help me understand this.
My sister-in-law is a harpist for a major symphony orchestra. It pisses me off that she is about the only non-audiophile I know who I can't get a Jaw Drop reaction from when hearing my (modest but well put together) system. Her reaction is "the best any system can do is REMIND you of the music." (The evil witch. I KNEW my brother shouldn't have married her).

But actually, just from reading the audio mags over the years, it seems this is not an uncommon reaction for musicians. Fritz Reiner, during the years he was making some of the finest recordings ever for RCA, used to refer to hi-fi as "hi-phooey".

The explaination I've heard advanced for this attitude is that musicians, being so intimatly familiar with the real thing "absolute sound", are the people who realize most how far from it even the best audio system is.

On the other hand, there are the guys like Keith Jarrett who seem to go all out to create audiophile systems to bring the absolute sound home...

Any thoughts? What do you as a musician hear/listen for in reproduced music? How far from the real thing are we?

(Then of course, there's Herbie "Bose" Hancock, but thats another story...)
