Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Kurt Masur interviewed on Tony Rose PBS show last night

Interesting to see a discussion about the politics of the orchestra. Thankfully, Rose is not a music insider and let Masur lead the conversation instead of fawning over a "maestro".

It was pretty clear Masur believes he was canned by NYPO for bypassing management in dealing with musicians, and for refusing to perform more American contemporary works (as demanded by the insiders).

He said "NYPO should not play as provincial American orchestra". And that American (musical) nationalism influences repetoire far too much. He strongly implied that NY orchestra audiences have become wary because so much bad contemporary work is forced on them.

Good for you Kurt! Way too much noise is passing for classical music simply because rich wannabees commission techno-hack "composers" (my words).

He also said some of the major European orchestras (i.e., the musicians) have become very arrogant. No surprise there.

His discussion of the NYPO Brahms Requiem performance after 9/11 was quite emotional...the most powerful moment in his career.
