The RVG remasters are SO extended, open and detailed that I found, at first, they sounded harsh and sibilant with weak bass. The whole thing really caused me to re-evaluate my system. To make a long story short, these remasters are so good they will actually show up a weak system. When I got mine to the right point, they revealed themselves to be just about the best remasters out there.
RVG recorded for Blue Note very 'hot', i.e. really red-lined the meters. The cymbal sound is what is there on the tape - hot. Especially Blakey recordings - he really rode the high hat.
The tonal accuracy is phenomenal, but compared to earlier versions, particularly the Japanese TOCJ series, there is less compression, and more openess, which can comparatively sound less warm, when in reality, it is just not compressed.
