David Diamond (still alive, in his 80s, I believe). The finest symphonist of them all, in my opinion. Large collection of his symphonic works on Delos. Strongest possible recomendation for his masterpiece, Symphony #2 on Delos 3093.Normal Dello Joio, masterpieces on Koch, Albany, etc.
Walter Piston, works on Mercury, Delos.
Paul Creston, symphonic powerhouse. Recordings on Delos (preferred) and Naxos.
Samuel Barber, American master. Symphonic pieces on many labels, including classics on Sony (Columbia), Chandos, Naxos, etc.
Roy Harris, symphonies on DG, Albany.
Howard Hanson, all symphonies and other works on Delos, Mercury.
Richard Danielpour, living American composer (in his mid 40s), recorded on Delos and Sony. Recommend th ecollection on Delos 3118 which includes "First Light" and his Symphony #3.
Persichetti, recordings on Mercury, Klavier, etc.
William Shuman, symphonic works on various labels, including RCA-BMG;
not quite a master; his music weakened by trends he succumed to.********LABELS
Strongly recommend you study the Albany records catalog. Current digital recordings of American music are outstanding, along with the very best digital sound. They've also been releasing a treasure trove of American symphonic tonal 20th cent composition from the old Louisville First Performance label.Mercury has excellent collections of American symphonic works, both in big pieces and shorted works.
CRI has been reissuing it's catalog of less tonal, more radical compositions, along with current recordings.
Koch, as noted above, contains a good quantity of American symphonic music.
Klavier issues the rich but neglected genre of symphonic band compositions, worth you while to hear.
And, don't neglect the symphonic jazz compositions of Duke Ellignton, on a variety of labels.
