Well, acoustic memory going back over 40 years (and as I think about it, the Bjoerling recital I heard must have been earlier than 1959), it is hard to say. Certainly when I was younger, I didn't think any recordings did justice to the actual sound of his voice, but then I didn't have the Quads in those days.

The Carnegie Hall recital for Bjoerling is a high fidelity recording for the voice, although the piano lacks bass, and some of his recordings for RCA and London were very fine.

Judging from the recordings I have, which range from Seraphim reissues from the 30's and 40's, to RCA, EMI, and London opera recordings, his recorded performances were always first class. This is not to say that his performances were always the "best," though many seem to be. He did not manage the tenderness of "Le rêve" from Massenet's Manon as well as Richard Crooks, for example, or "Vesti la giubba" from Pagliacci as well as Caruso, though he did the latter very well indeed.

There is his classic performance of "Nessun dorma" from Turandot under Nils Grevillius recorded in 1944, I believe. There are his recordings of Pagliacci, Cavalleria, Bohème, Tosca, Rigoletto, Trovatore, Turandot, and the Verdi Requiem, among others. I suppose if I were to sit down to listen to some Bjoerling recordings, they would most likely be one of these:

Jussi Bjoerling In Concert, RCA LM-2784
Bjoerling Sings in Carnegie Hall, RCA LM-2003
Bjoerling in Opera, RCA LM-2269 or AGM1-4806
La Bohème, EMI CDS 7 47235 8

However, that's simply personal preference, based partly on what I used to listen to, not a list of best recordings and performances, per se.

I am humbled that anyone would eagerly review my every post!
