Another thought occured to me that I can't believe I missed when you were asking opera questions in association with the Kiri album you liked. This advice is one I, and I think others often forget.
GO SEE ONE
Opera is only partially an audio medium. The visual experience is critically important. Opera singers are (the good ones anyway) actors.
They wear costumes and move around sets with theatrical lighting and use props. The women are sometimes beautiful. The story is much easier to follow when you can watch the facial expressions and body language as the actors relate to each other even if you don't know the Italian, French or German.
Live performance of chamber music or orchestral or chorale is great,but in getting familar with opera it's essential. If you live in a latge city with an opera company great,but if not check out college productions.
