Dave: Thanks for the reply. I also hope Rob's absence is self-imposed.I read the old thread on Mahler's therad. You're correct as Bruno with Columbia Symphony (stereo) is the best. What is remarkable is the delicate balance he maiteined throughout between differentsections of the orchestra, specifically between the brass section and strings during funeral marches. Solti is not bad, but just leaves me wondering how the modern conductor with all the facilities and recording techniques just unable to bring "life" into the piece. I agree with you on Bruno. Only Mahler himself could have out performed Bruno, even that would be hard since he groomed Bruno himself. Abbado with BPO does not measure with the other two. For some reason it sound so big, but he fails to deliver "musical message" in the process.
