"Music is the answer to the mystery of life. The most profound of all the arts, it expresses the deepest thoughts of life."
- Arthur SchopenhauerJust this week I discovered the thinking of this philosopher. Although I'm still a newby to his writings, I find his presentation of "will" (a fundamental desire or craving underlying ALL life -- maybe even being the definition of life itself) to be very compelling. In the abstract, he considers dreams and ideas to be the manifestation of this will. In terms of concrete expression and experience, he points to music.
For me, it's the most sense anything has made to me withing the last couple of days. I don't yet know if he has an opinion about "formalism" in music (musicical notation and style as a "language with rules"), although I do know that the most musical of animals -- birds and whales, for example -- cannot write, or post to internet forums :-)
Here's an interesting title soon to join my library...
