It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Ah, yes...his Schubert "Great"

Forgot about that little puppy. Jay, please do me a favor and post your impressions of the Mercury original you're getting.

I used to have that performance on a Philips World LP--the one with the collage of ol' Franz's face pasted over the picture of a guy driving a sports car along with some other questionable symbology. Guess it was supposed to appeal to the mid-60s youth market. But I digress. In purging my bloated collection a few years ago, I tossed all the stereo Schubert "Greats" except Munch, Krips and Szell (historical/mono performances are a separate issue). The reason Skrowaczewski didn't stick around, IIRC, is not because of anything wrong with the performance, but because the sonics were only so-so on that pressing--and the surfaces weren't the greatest on my copy either. I always got the impression that the recording must sound much clearer and more dynamic on the earlier Mercury pressings--and if that's the case, I'd like to know, so I can put it on my want list. Hope you find your copy to be a good one.

Good listening,

Dirk
