It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Keith Jarrett's "vocal blend"

161.233.1.130

I think it's interesting that you use KJ's vocal contributions as part of an argument justifying the "blending" of voices with instruments in modern performance. During our KJ discussions, I believe three perspectives dominated:

(1) "It's annoying and I wish he'd stop it (since he's a great piano player)" or

(2) "It's distracting, but I can live with it (since he's a great piano player) or

(3) "It doesn't really bother me (since he's a great piano player).

Perspectives that were NOT cited with regard to his gurgling:

(1) It ENHANCES his performance
(2) It is part of the musical composition
(3) It is calculated in any way to "blend in" with the musical composition

The first 3 points, I beleive, would consider that "vocalization" is NOT a legitimate part of modern musical performance...it is something of an unavoidable distraction.

The second 3 points would place vocalizations acceptably (certainly) as part of performance but (questionably) as part of the music composition itself.

Lastly -- and in good humor :-) -- I would never define Keith Jarrett as a "jazz singer"!

Regards,

Steve
