i believe that this is a previously unreleased set from 1977. The band is made up of a quartet that includes a number of underappreciated musicians: Carter Jefferson (Tenor), Larry Willis (Piano), Victor Lewis (Drums), Stafford James (Bass). The tunes include,Love Dance (15 min), Light Valley (11 min), Why (19 min), Stepping Stone (11 min). The performance as expected is magical. The rhythm section is locked in and CJ and WS blow some provocative lines. It is a shame the way Woody went out. Basically destitute. I wasn't even into "Real" Jazz at that time (late 80's) but I remeber his passing as I heard a number of tributes on NPR. I later came to appreciate what his passing meant. I guess you can say the trumpet torch was passed on to Wynton. Not much has happened on the instrument since this time. There have been some false starts (Hargrove and Payton maybe) but no one has endured. There is hope in Dave Douglas. He is doing something on trumpet.
