30 years ago, even if we liked the subjects and classmates, we dreaded getting up for our 8:00a college classes. And those classes were made worse, when the heat did not work.
"I didn't know this was P.E.," joked one of my friends. In order to warm up, in that cold classroom, she did some stretching exercises.
We then talked about what we wanted to do, outside of class.
In 1992, I did go home to San Francisco, for Thanksgiving. But after that, I hooked up with my ex-girlfriend, and other UC Berkeley friends. We ended up seeing the then-new Disney movie, Aladdin. And during the scene where Princess Jasmine is taken on the magic carpet ride, Brad Kane & Lea Salonga's "A Whole New World" brought us to tears. It brought about an optimism, more possibilities.
Back then, we were 18-, 19-, and 20-years old (just like Brad Kane and Lea Salonga). When we hear or see "A Whole New World," we need a moment. On one hand, we can't believe it's been 30 years. OTOH, it's like we are still in our late-teens and early-20s.
In adult contemporary music, the version of "A Whole New World" by Peabo Bryson & Regina Belle was a #1 hit. That one's good, too. But because the Brad Kane & Lea Salonga version is the one which appeared in the movie, that's the one, which makes us emotional.
