In October 1992, Santa Cruz actually received more than an inch of rain. This (a) came during an almost 7-year drought, and put an end to the Fall 1992 fire season.
The "problem" was, those October rains tended to occur overnight and into the waking hours. We students at UC Santa Cruz wanted the "First Rain" to take place in the evening and nighttime. We wanted to continue a tradition, started in 1989, of walking semi- or fully-naked across campus. Don't take my word for it; look it up.
"OMG, silver fillings!" exclaims my old friend Ari. "That shows how old I am. Both my dentist and my kids' dentist say they no longer use silver."
30 years ago, Ari and I were in downtown Santa Cruz. There, we saw Kenny G's new album, Breathless, which Ari bought on CD. Since I had a Sony ES/Adcom/AQ/Pinnacle stereo, Ari often came over to my college apartment. No, she did not participate in the 1992 First Rain, but she did like Kenny G's "In The Rain."
Back at Ari's apartment, her roommate brought a boombox into the bathroom. They did not have a shower radio. But the shower was separate from the sink, so the boombox was safe from steam. Ari's roommate wanted the music to reach into the shower, so while showering, she left the room door open. She liked how "Forever In Love" led to "In The Rain." The roommate joked, "How very audiophile of me!"
