Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

Long line of bass players.

Cachaito was Israel's (Cachao) nephew.

Israel and his brother, Orestes, composed hundreds of tunes mainly, danzones. His sister also composed, Isora Club is one of hers.

Their father and grandfather also played bass (other instruments as well, but the bass line -hee hee-- run i the family), and directed bands.

'Social Club Buenavista' was composed in the 40's by Isarel. It's a real place, in a real neighborhood.
Tradition was that a band would composed to danzon to a place they played it. So you see danzones from 1905 with the improbable name of Deutschland.
(Best as I can figure named after the German cruiser that hung around the Caribbean around that time waving the Kaiser's flag, and visited Matanzas around that time.)

The BVSC grouping is/was based around the Afro-Cuba All Stars (lead by Juan de Marcos, former tres player for Sierra Maestra), with some Santiago muscians added in (Ochoa, Compay).

I saw Cachao in his last concert. This was at the Arsht Cneter in Miami; the concert was released as 'The Last Mambo,' I think this received a Grammy.

Got lucky on one of my trips to SF and saw Septeto Nacional at Yoshi's.

Check out Cachao's Master Sessions.
