You know, jdaniel, I read that Bernstein wanted to conduct that all his life. I empathize with his aspiration (I possess and am forever bothering others to play with me all the string quartets scored for piano duet), and like him I greatly revere the work. But to me his interpretation falls slightly short of those of the very best quartet groups. Then again, he's almost never been my very favorite conductor of anything though that is not meant to be censure; I grew up with and loved his televised music exegeses during the 1950s.
