I saw him conduct the Philadephia Orchestra live in DC in the mid 80s. Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances and the Rococco Variations with Paul Tortelier. I still have wonderful memories of the concert, which was splendid.
Recordings I've heard are generally fine, but not exceptional. I own the Ravel and Poulenc boxes and they are solid and workmanlike, but nothing particularly moving or memorable there for me.
