I absolutely loved the concerto from beginning to end. No fussiness, perfect (IMHO) balance between momentary indulgence and forward motion, and full-bodied, bottom-up sound on the part of the orchestra which makes Korngold's below-middle-C chords positively glow.
Celesta and harp sparkle and are well-caught, (I suspect spot-mic'd), and add a nice splash of color here and there; in fact I don't recall a recording that better captures Korngold's colorful orchestration. Gaffigan seems more attuned to K's soundworld than Prokofiev's.
I've never warmed-up to the Britten VC, but I think I'll give this team a try in that piece as well.
