I haven't heard this all the way through for ages and since instrumental suites and just the overture got all the airplay (back when there was airplay) I never made the connection before. There are no coincidences.
I played in a Summer Theatre pit orchestra for 2 weeks worth of performances once so when Mendelssohn's duet "spotted snakes" commenced I thought I was hearing Yum-Yum, Peep-Bo, and Pitti-Sing. The Mikado comes along 40 years later so I guess we know who borrowed what.
This DG-138959 is a later release without Tulips but still sounds great. That's about 4 winners in a row now after decades of avoiding DG because of poor recording quality. The miking is still a little suspect on these, though.
Seems like a great performance without fussy tempo changes or other nuisances of some conductors. I read where Mendelssohn was against 'Radical' composers so a "what's on the page" reading of his works would make the most sense.
