Regular musicians aren't allowed to breath - at least not audibly.
However, HIPs are encouraged to do so since it's more, you know HIP.
Also encouraged is bow scraping, reed squealing, brass rasping, piano clanging, percussion pounding, and so on.
Professional quality ensemble playing is optional, as on HIPster opined in my Beethoven 1 thread. As he put it, playing should be 'off'.
Above all, beauty of tone is violently discouraged, since that's so 2oth century.
Ooops - the 20th century's now also HIP. It's exactly like the 19th, which is exactly like the 18th, which is exactly like the 17th------
