I only have the copies of last two. And if I recall the earlier one was more energetic than his last recording.
You are right about no guarantee just because he knew the composer and Mahler himself never heard Walter conduct one of his scores. But I assumed Walter was more than just an acquaintance.
Bummer than Mengelberg never conducted the 1st as I think he would be terrific.
I need to try Walter's 4th.
