The people giving the award were understandably a bit nonplussed that Sokolov rejected it publicly, when he could have rejected it privately before they announced it, saving them some embarrassment. Instead, Sokolov's agent had told them he would be happy to accept it. At least that's the sense I got from their response.
No big deal, and as I said, Sokolov no doubt had no idea Lebrecht was associated with the award when he agreed to it initially, or when his agent did so on his behalf.
