Had a little Beethoven marathon last night with the lesser-known symphonies and it was so enjoyable, not least because of Scherchen's vigor and imagination and the edge-of-seat playing of the LSO on the down low.
I can't get the evergreen whistling tune of the 4th symphony first mov't out of my head, (shared by woodwinds), nor the balmy string theme of the 2nd Symphony's slow movement. Hints of Bruckner at the end of the 1st mov't of the 2nd symphony as well!
The 2nd mov't of the 8 is right out of Prokofiev's Classical Symphony; not to mention the opening theme of the 8th is so invigorating and fresh.
