Over on Rocky Road, I've covered several albums, which happened to come out in 1992. Some of you, now accustomed to that time period, have asked that we stick around a little longer. So let us go back to late May 1992. I was a junior at UCSC's Crown College, which was then 1 of 8 residential colleges [there are now 10]. For those of us intending to live on campus the next (92-93) school year, it was time to go to the Community Room, to make a selection. I went with my friend Gwen. We were interested in the Crown-Merrill apartments. Student Housing told me and Gwen that a boy and a girl could not be roommates. So if we were to get an apartment (4 students per 2-bedroom unit), the mix had to be 2 boys & 2 girls, with the boys in one room, the girls in the other. There were hardly any solo females, and Gwen couldn't find a roommate. Thus, she ended up going back to the dorms, in a single room.
I found my friend Will. Years later, I would be his best man at his wedding. Eventually, we found two other guys, and we got an apartment.
But anyway, while all this was going on, there was a boombox on a table behind the staff. Understand, in those days, radio reception on campus was very poor. Typically, you'd be lucky, if you could cleanly tune in 6 stations. K.W.S.' "Please Don't Go" came on, to which Nora blurted out, "A KC & The Sunshine Band cover? Really?!"
Imagine the Peanuts' Marcie with long brown hair. That was Nora. In those days of grunge and alternative, I was surprised that anyone even knew who KC & The Sunshine Band were.
K.W.S. were a British act. Those initials stood for the last names of Chris King, Winston Williams, and Delroy St. Joseph. Anyway, the wannabe hippies at UCSC hated dance music, didn't like KC & The Sunshine Band or K.W.S.
When I was home in San Francisco, I went with 6-7 friends downtown. We were at the Union Square Macy's. I recall walking past the perfume, watches, and jewelry. We were in the young men's hip hop clothing section, when we overheard K.W.S.' "Please Don't Go." It just seemed to fit the mood and culture.
If you are currently in the Bay Area, you'll find that our radio stations now play a lot of KC & The Sunshine Band. But the stations don't play the slower "Please Don't Go" that often. With the 90s now being called "throwback" and "old school," I occasionally hear radio stations play the K.W.S. version. My kids and their elementary school brethren like to sing and dance to this.
For a number of years, I've recommended and suggested this to audiophiles. Since we over on Rocky Road were discussing a lot of heavy metal albums from 1992, I thought it time to come here, revisit 1992, and pull out K.W.S.' "Please Don't Go."
The Audiophiles' DJ,
-Lummy The Loch Monsterp.s.: in addition to being a friend, Gwen had a couple of classes with me. During the 92-93 school year, I occasionally went over to her dorm room. But more often than that, she came over to my apartment, which (when we weren't playing music) was quieter and had lots more space. Gwen, my roommate Will, and I got along very well, hung out a lot, did a lot of activities together. The three of us sighed and lamented that we couldn't find a suitable (female) roommate for Gwen. As wonderful as that school year was, the three of us knew it would have been even more awesome, had Will, Gwen, some mystery girl, and I had been housemates [after a quarter, my other two housemates didn't get along with each other].
