John Marks on Oistrakh's Brahm Violin Concerto

John's Column Fifth Element in Stereophile (Feb 2015) is indeed thought provoking and probably has opened up a can worms in the recording industry. In particular, he referred to Oistrakh's Brahm Violin Concerto In particular, the SACD was remixed with a reference Concert A of 446.5 Hz instead of 440 Hz, resulting in "sharp" and "too fast" performance. I have always felt the same way about this LP (Angel SFO 36033) without knowing this reason behind it. I felt the same about Oistrakh's Beethoven Concerto too (Angel S35780) - not knowing the Concert A frequency for this LP - though to a lesser degree than the Brahms.

Then I did a little experiment. I ran the TT a bit slower so that a 1 kHz test signal measured at 995 Hz - I could have gone lower but didn't. The difference I heard from the two aforementioned LP's was a lot satisfying - the performances were much more relaxed. Simply more musical and enjoyable. Oistrakh's violin is no longer harsh and fatiguing.

Next I contiued to play The Art of Victoria de Los Angeles (EMI SLS 5233). Again I came to the same conclusion mentioned in the last paragraph although to a much less extent. I am not sure if that was due to my preference for a more relaxed presentation, especially for female vocals, or many EMI records share the same problem mentioned by John Marks. Like to hear the opinions of others.
