Great post. Thanks! And please call me John.
I'm a believer, but, as the title says, trying to reconcile the Gospel accounts is like trying to "reconcile" the various viewpoints in one Picasso painting or reconcile that famous Kurosawa film "Rashomon." So, the tradition I embrace holds that the Bible conveys spiritual truths through the use of symbolic, figurative, and poetic language.
(NB, one of the great Medieval Rabbis said "Shame on you!" if you think that the creation story in Genesis is literally true. OTW, why are there TWO creation accounts in Genesis--human creation, that is. I know! I know! Because Kurosawa had a time machine, and HE wrote Genesis.)
So I am serenely untroubled by the fact that there were not any yappy little lapdogs on Noah's Ark. (Job No. 1 in Sunday School is making sure that they all know that Joan of Arc was not Noah's wife. Little Catholic joke.) Those yappy little lapdogs came along around the time of the Renaissance, which shows that Darwin was right at least about speciation, but of course he was clueless and silent on the origin of life, or the meaning of life.
Now, at the risk of marking myself out as a total hayseed, and this is just a jeu d'esprit in an intellectual discussion, I have always had a sentimental attachment to the notion that "of Nazareth" in the redacted compiled Gospels might be a misunderstanding of haNazrim, or, "Nazirite," as in, having taken the vows of a Nazirite, like Samson.
OK, shoot me.
ATB,
John
