Jonas Kaufman (Siegmund) and Hans-Peter Konig (Hunding) were brilliant in Act 1, Act 2 is a bit long and tedious but Stephanie Blythe (Fricka) gave Wotan (Bryn Terfel) an appropriate dressing down for his philandering with other gods and mortals. The reproachment of Brunhilde (Deborah Voit) by Wotan in Act 3 was both excellent and touching - superb singing and acting.
And what an offspring Wotan produced resulting in the Valkyries and the twin lovers, the focus of this opera. And this must be about as silly as opera plots can get with incest, adultery, .... but we cannot wait to see a nephew (Siegfied) seduce his step aunt Brunhilde, surrounded by flames, in the next great Ring event. Yes one can sneer at the plot absurdities but not at the glorious music.
The staging was unobtrusive as the 45 ton machine with its revolving planks had less to do and the dress was appropriate to free this from Eurotrash criticism.
4 hours is a long time for an opera and Siefried will be no shorter but Gotterdammerung will be 4.5 hours!! But when you look at all the incest, adultery, betrayal etc one can be thankful to the curse of Alberich that the gods are eventually doomed. But getting there is quite a Wagnerian ride!
