The CD collection on hard drive is fine - easy to put multiple tabs to find what you want quickly. If only those video discs were so easy!!The collection of videos has grown like Topsy over the years with hundreds of them burned from TV broadcasts after suitable editing. They were sorted, sort off, but then add in the purchased DVDs & BDs + the DVDs presently being ripped from a collection of laserdiscs and I have a serious problem to locate some items, particularly those taken off TV and not yet viewed.
So how to handle all these different types of discs?
I did a search and found a heap of SLAPPA CD folders (120/240 & 80/160) on sale at half price so many were purchased for the DVDs & BDs. For a bit it looked as if too many has been bought but it is turning out there are only just enough for the music DVDs & BDs so other DVDs will not go into folders as first envisaged.
The empty commercial DVD & BD plastic holders will be left on the shelf so the internal printed matter with descriptions, casting etc can be accessed if needed so only the discs will go into the SLAPPA folders.
So how to best categorise the collection into those folders?
Operas are easy - sort under the composer surname.
Ballets easy - sort under title
Chamber (including instrumental) was not quite so easy so the decision was made to make COMPOSER (surname) the priority with artist surname a secondary field. But that left quite a few burned from TV hard to categorise so a "MIX" was written on each of them and they were lumped together under "M". This system also accounted for bios on single artists.
Then it became stickier to work out what to do with the rest so the decision was made to separate out the Bios of the composers and to treat all the remaining concerts etc as had been done with Chamber - make COMPOSER (surname) first priority, then artist surname next - OK for conductor but with concertos the instrumental artist takes priority. And of course there are a few which will have to be dumped into the "MIX" category also.
And there are quite a few "cheapie" promotional DVDs & BDs which have a mix of ballet & opera on which will go together somewhere.
Sorting them all out is a bit challenging but hopefully the end result will be easier access to the collection. And when put together there were a few surprises - Over 400 operatic sets (by far the most recorded off TV) with 10 versions of "La Traviata", 9 of "Carmen" and 8 of "Aida".
Yes I'll agree. It is collecting which got a bit out of hand but looking at the size of it has sobered up the impulse to record much more. I guess the BBC music mag. will persuade me to purchase an odd one in the future, but having exhaustively sorted it out and filled the folders (still an operation in progress) any new items would be hard to put into place. Slappa had what seemed a good idea at making inserts removable but in practice it does not work. If complete pages could be interchanged, as in some folders, yes, adding items in the middle becomes possible but the SLAPPA system is not designed that way.
It will be another 2 to 3 weeks before the LP ripping is finished as discs have to be copied in real time. There is an option for fast burning but, being a manic perfectionist I'm burning in real time once recorded onto hard drive. BTW I'm using a DVD recorder, not a PC.
I guess it is keeping me out of mischief!!
