You would probably get a more informed response on Vinyl Asylum. There were a lot of excellent turntables and cartridges being built back in the 1960s. Even modestly priced components would track these recordings just fine -- and sound great. I loved my old Thorens table with Shure V15 cartridge. It had no problem tracking these LPs, because I bought them some years later and played them on that equipment.
Of course, mass consumer products were lesser quality. But that is true even today. The vast majority of people today listen to music using mass market equipment with poor audio quality, from boom boxes to MP3 players.
By the way, there's nothing like listening to Russian music played by Russian orchestras from the Pre-Homogenization era. They did not achieve the most euphonious sound, but their pedal-to-the-metal brass was really quite thrilling.
