RE: Armenian Church Music

Neil,
Welcome. Lusine was the Voice of the Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiatzin
in Armenia. A thorough researcher of most ancient traditions of the Armenian Church music with her musicologist husband who happens to be a distant relative of mine.
The video attached with your post is not Lusine, rather it is a selection from
recordings done in the mid nineties produced by David Parsons who went to most unusual locations, with deep rooted spiritual centers in historic monasteries all over Armenia. Packaged in six volumes, under the title "The Music of Armenia" and released in the US on 'Celestial Harmonics' label.
The you tube video attached is from volume two of the said series. The artist singing is Armenuhi Seiranian who is also a very talented singer.

I do have few of Lusine's recordings on vinyl from the former soviet period on
the Melodiya commercial recording firm. No CD's in any form though. Under soviet authority, many artists and intellectuals from the republics had extreme restrictions imposed on them and not freely allowed to travel to the west. Lusine was, with many harsh conditions allowed to travel abroad for a few concerts in the UK and the USA. I saw her in San Francisco a few years
before her untimely passing away.

Here is a site I found. You can listen to her glorious singing during her late golden years.
"Mother, where are You" track is #3 on the list.
The lyrics of the canticle laments; describing the moment during the Crucifixion when Roman soldiers gave vinegar to the thirsting Jesus.

Unfortunately the quality in sound is not audiophilia standards, but listen to her deep-deep rooted spirituality in her execution of those ancient canticles.

Regards,
Serge.
