hey trout bumWell, let me just say it wasn't any kind of dedicated fishing experience. It was more like a simple lack of responsibility experience. I didn't go anywhere new, I just didn't do anything old. I poked around the Siletz for steelhead, but the river is very slow right now. The trout fishing was verrrry good at the lakes and I really put the 4wt thru it's paces. I picked up a 19 incher that floored me with the width of that fish. He was a full 6 inches wide (high) and looked like a humpback salmon. I didn't weigh him, but he had to be close to 5 lbs. I had a 16 and 17 incher that had the same proportions - really the fattest trout I've ever seen and amzingly hard fighters.
Sunday was probably the best day - being the last day, it was a nice topper. I was fishing with 5 other flyfisherman and two of their wives in a large finger of the lake. The comradarie was cool and there wasn't a 5 minute period when someone's reel wasn't screaming. There was an incredible amount of action. I've finally had the pleasure of catching fish on my own flys - pretty cool!
I'm gonna be working the South Santiam River over the next couple of months. It doesn't get dark till 8:00 now, and I can be on the river in 30-40 minutes from where I live. I intend to turn work off early in the afternoon every day from now till September - I'm gonna try to to get some real experience this year with my 8wt on steelies. There's already summer fish in the Santiam (they're early) and it looks like it'll be a banner year for fish counts. It's a fun and pretty river to fish and is pretty easy wading too - I'm not as steady on my feet as I used to be:-) I'll keep you posted.
