I just received this cd (Naxos 8.553233) which contains Sibelius and Elgar's violin concertos. Dong-Suk Kang is the violinist and Adrian Leaper conducts Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra/Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. My reference recording has been by Chung and Oistrakh, and to my ears this performance is at the same level. Kang chose to play Sibelius a tad slower than Chung, and his playing is very sensitive, elegant and beautiful. Kang is not as emotional as Chung, but the performance certainly does not lack passion. The violin solo blends very well with the orchestra. One interesting aspect that I liked very much, is that when he plays a scale, he starts very slowly and then gradually increases the speed to very fast. Recording is very good, but sometimes it sounds a bit veiled.
I was not familiar with Elgar, so I need to listen to it a little more before forming my opinion. But Kang shows off a bit more in Elgar, and his technique is very very good.
I enjoyed Kang's thoughtful, elegant presentation of Sibelius very much. It is very different from Chung, which I would describe as passionate and beautiful but not over the top, and from Oistrakh with its large-scale, powerful performance. 3 different presentation that are all very musical and enjoyable in their own ways. And the CD is cheap!
