I think you should get used that not all recordings are audiophile, but that most legendary performances are in no way audiophile. I sent a copy of Mahler 4 conducted by Mengelberg to Jorge a couple of weeks ago and he also complained being distracted too much by the ticks, hiss and pops in the bad radio-recording, but when you just adjust to the idea it's an old recording, you're also able to listen to Furtwangler conducting wartime Beethoven which probably are the best performances ever.

Focus on the music Tom, and don't mind the sound this much, because before you know it, you will be listening to Reference Recordings by professor Johnson, which are nicely recorded CDs, but mediocre performances and thinking about the Strauss violin concerto I have with Chang, which is no audiophile recording either, she deserves better than bashing the sound of the recording, because you can, if you want, hear a really good violist like listening to Heifetz, Oistrakh and Menuhin at ancient mono-recordings.

Just my two cents,

Rob
