and the fast movements of the Mendelssohn do indeed seem. . . fast (as befits HIP orthodoxy!).
The decision to play to the last movement of the E minor as fast as possible is less driven by "HIP orthodoxy" and more to do with violinists wanting to show off their technical prowess. Mullova/Gardiner take a pretty leisurely pace in the last movement -- 7:17 vs the typical 6 minutes and less -- resulting in an unusually lyrical finale.
