Wild how Travis should write of the Norman Granz book. I ordered the CD from the recently found reel to reel of the Jazz at The Phil concert from 1956 and am glad I did. The people playing on this gig were the absolute cerme de la creme. All were playing at the peaks of their careers. The music, all standards. Right now Illinois Jacquet is doing a solo on Moonglow, with Oscar Peterson and the boys backing him up. Man was Jacquet good. Weird as I now am most probably older than most of the musicians were when this was made. You too. The sound you audiophiles ask. While it may not be up to the quality of Hank Jones' July 6th on SACD, it is pretty darn good for what it is. It's mono, but that breath of life IS there as there seems to have been minimal monkeying around during the CD mastering. There actually is high and low end as you can hear the blare of a trumpet or the thunk of a drumhead, with no hiss whatsoever. People in the audience are clearly heard. Yeah, it's that clean. Wow, Little Jazz just nailed a solo on Noisy Norman Blues. Now I know what my dad was saying about how good that cat was. Too bad dad isn't around to hear what is essentially a document of the music of his youth (mid 20s then). If you are a jazzer and have any interest in the mid 50s jazz at the phil gigs your dads and grandparents may have told you about, you must buy this release now. Jo Jones is soloing right now and I'll be darned if I can hear the cymbals without splash as you would have expected. Later.
