It seems to me you want as much resolution as you can possibly get from the old recordings, even if they are not as high-rez as is possible today, because there are some great old performances still worth hearing.

I once did a careful A/B comparison between the original 1963 RCA LP of Jascha Heifetz playing the Bruch G major violin concerto and the excellent hybrid SACD issued a few years ago. Both sounded very good, but the original LP did sound slightly more detailed than even the SACD, never mind the CD layer. So IMO it's worth getting the best possible resolution and frequency range if the price is reasonable.
