Yes - of course. The copy generally cannot exceed the source (in this case, a digital copy of an open reel master). I hope that was clear from my OP.But there are other factors at work. As I know from my own experience, some master tapes from that era have deteriorated, and it sure would have been nice if we could have gotten a 24/96 copy before the deterioration started to creep in. (Check out the Everest reissues from Classic Records.) For an even more recent example, I just bought the complete Melodiya set of Glazunov symphonies recorded in 1982, with Rozhdestvensky conducting - some people say this was a digital recording, but its type of deterioration shows analogue characteristics. Maybe it was the particular Soviet tape formulations from that era, but some sections now exhibit such a wow that it just makes you want to run for cover (with your ears plugged)! Actually, you can exceed master tape quality - if you made a copy earlier on and the master tape has stretched (or otherwise deteriorated) in the meantime! ;-)
