Metheny has said that "American Garage" is his least-favorite of all his albums. Which bummed me out, because it's one of my favorite records of all time. As rditmars said, you should definitely pick up "Pat Metheny Group" and "Bright Size Life". I would also encourage you to consider the live albums "Travels" and "The Road to You", and the studio album "Imaginary Day", each of which is relatively rock-inflected within the Metheny canon.
You might also want to check out a band called Elements, which featured Metheny's AG-era rhythm section of Danny Gottlieb and Mark Egan. "Forward Motion" is where I'd start.
And if you like Bill Evans, you should grab Lyle Mays' "Fictionary".
