I agree with Brian's assessment. The 1939 Mahler 1 is a wonderful performance. This performance, along with the ancient Mengelberg Mahler 4, is a good reason to learn to put up with antique sound in order to get into some of the classic past performances.
OTOH, you have to be in the right mood. I was listening to Toscanini's NBC recording of Beethoven 8th symphony this morning, and it was too bass-deprived and distorted to be listenable (today). So I listened to the Scherchen 1954 performance, which, although mono and a little shrill, was tolerable (and worth tolerating!).
