This Schumann symphony is easily Szell's strongest, and the second movement of this performance is definitive. (I don't like Szell with the other Schumann symphonies.)
Oddly, I like the other two Cleveland MD's even better with Schumann's "Rhenish", Christoph von Dohnanyi and Franz Welser Moest...... The latter with the London Philharmonic...... Which would be my rec. if I had to choose just one. It is maybe the only Franz Welser Moest performance on recording I like. (Leonard Bernstein, another conductor I've never cared for, put forth one of only few Schumann Fours I thought was done well.)
Schumann is one of few composers whose symphonies I rarely hear done well, and a composer whose compositions really bring out the weaknesses in both conductors and symphony orchestras...... (I think Daniel Barenboim and Simon Rattle are both awful with this composer.)
