Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

This is called a discussion

And it's very pleasant to engage with someone with informed opinions. Lots of posts involving individual taste descend into shouting matches. I appreciate your civility in the face of my criticism.

Let's leave the Szell disagreement go. We both know they're good but not perfect, for whatever reasons.

Of the SACD's and CD's I've owned over the years, perhaps the best sonics are Kreizberg on Pentatone, but I feel he pulls tempos around too much. You're right: Dvorak doesn't need a conductor's "improvements" in any aspect of performance. Just play the damn notes. The Fischer on Channel was nice, but it seemed there was something not quite right about the sonics. String tone was lush and smooth, but the entire orchestral image, or the space they were in, didn't seem quite real. I absolutely rave about many Channel discs, but this was not one of them. I thought the performance was better than okay.

That leaves me with Reiner, and I have loved it over the years. I am not a person who usually chooses anitique recordings as my favorite. This is one of those that I cannot deny. The sound is more than decent, and, of course, the orchestra is superb. And Fritz just plays the damn notes!

Peace,
Tom E
