Home Music Lane

It's all about the music, dude! Sit down, relax and listen to some tunes.

I do it about once a year...

"There was a time when I used to cull about every 4-6 months, take a sack of CDs to the store, cash 'em in and walk out with new stuff. But I noticed two things: 1) I often found myself missing the CDs I sold back, and often wound up buying them again,"

This has happened to me many times, but even so, I cull because 95% of the time, I don't miss the CD's I've culled.

"2) I usually didn't use my money very wisely when I traded CDs in, and bought expensive box sets and such just because I had $110 store credit."

Yes indeed. Because I cull infrequently, the number of CD's in any cull is often pretty large (I have a large collection, and buy a lot of product; I've been known to cull as many as 500-600 discs at a time). So I usually wait until there's something I need or want to buy - a new piece of audio equipment, a camera, new golf clubs, or something similar - before culling. That accomplishes two things; it keeps me from spending the money on more CD's immediately, and it also makes the culling a little more draconian ("which do I need more - a 12th complete set of Beethoven symphonies, or a new preamp?").

BTW, those of you who cull solely for space reasons might want to investigate Jazzloft sleeves (see link). They will hold the CD, the booklet, and the back insert without requiring you to fold or otherwise deface the insert, or store it separately from the CD. It's not a cheap fix, particularly if you've got a large collection, and it takes some time to transfer the CD's to the sleeves, but it can cut down the physical size of your collection considerably:
