First, as already mentioned twice, the Callas /Di Stefano on EMI. No other performance comes close. If you are searching on LP, be careful of fake stereo versions. EMI reissued the orignal mono in the late '50s or early '60s in fake stereo and,AFAIK, this is the version that remained in the catalog until the advent of CD. It difficult to decide which is the worse crime. Taking a performance like this and turning into a fake or taking it and chopping uo in bits. Two stereo performances to consider are the RCA Soria (LDS 7022)with the young Leontyne Price in the title role. Again Di Stefano is Cavaradossi, Taddei the Baron. My quibble is that von Karajan is the conductor, and I've never been able to warm up to his Teutonic approach to Italian opera.
The other is Tebaldi on Decca/London. The weakness here is Mario del Monaco as Cavaradossi. DiStefano he's not. George London is Scarpia and is, IMHO, wonderfully menacing in that rich bass of his. Molinari-Pradelli conducts. This has recently been reissued on King Super Analogue and has glorious sound.
