. . . I can vouch for the Szell/Cleveland, von Matacic/CzPO, Ansermet/SRO, Haitink/LSO, Abbado/BPO (I even like the 2000 incarnation, at least on DVD-Audio). For monumentality, you might also consider the Giulini/LAPO recording on DG, despite the typically lousy sound (which has nevertheless been improved in its latest "Originals" reissue). Also, I have not heard it yet, but on the basis of symphonies 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, and 8 which I've heard so far, I will be buying the recording by Wojciech Rajski and the Polish Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra, Sopot, on the Tacet label (available right now only as an SACD). Another few to consider are the Munch/BSO recording on a JVC XRCD (a driving performance which often gets overlooked), the Markevich/SotA (which now seems to be going for top dollar at Amazon), the Leibowitz/RPO (another slashing, driving performance), and the Kempe/BPO (a middle European interpretation which really sticks to your bones!). I must say however that I've never known what all the fuss was about concerning the Scherchen 1958 Westminster recording - sure, it has a certain exhilaration because of its fast tempos, but I find it woefully underarticulated (or at least I did when I had it).Are you more confused than ever? :-)
